Your Content Marketing Plan: In 2026, Businesses Need Strategy

With 2026 underway, it's more important than ever for your business to have an idea of what you want to accomplish throughout the year. What I recommend to set yourself up for long term success is having goals to achieve on a month by month basis. It can be so easy to think about things from a larger perspective and make an attempt to tackle sizable goals right off the bat. Doing this can lead to more harm than good, however - trying to tackle larger problems can lead to frustration, and eventually businesses stepping away from the goals they wanted to complete altogether. Instead, create a content calendar with realistic goals, expectations, and actions that can be taken in small increments to maximize your efforts and progressively reach more results.

Set Realistic Goals For The Next 12 Months

When you create a content marketing plan for your business, go month by month. Having structure and deadlines for your goals will make them much easier to attain. For example, even if during one month you aim to simply set up an email list with your first campaign and monthly content, it will make it so much easier for you to complete other goals once you fulfill that one. People make the mistake of trying to do too much in too little time - take a couple of small, doable wins first and build off of that momentum to continue the growth.

Choose A Content Theme For Each Month

This can be in the form of a sale, a specific approach that you want to take, or anything else you can think of. An easy way to start doing this is to simply think about the month, what people associate it with, and how you can incorporate those things people think of into your business. For a basic example - if you have a clothing store and it's January, perhaps you'd want to shift your marketing efforts towards warmer clothes - OR, you could think about what colors people typically wear in the winter and structure your theme around pushing a certain style or pattern.

Don't Overdo It

One of the biggest mistakes people make is to think they need to do more than what's actually required. Every business needs marketing, but don't overthink it - especially if you don't have much experience. The great thing about our world currently is how easy it is to learn, and there are so many accurate, helpful resources on marketing. Set tangible, realistic goals for the year with start & end dates every month - figure out how you can execute them - and do it!
